The Newcastle Philosophy Society practices free philosophical conversation, welcoming everyone with an interest in philosophy – especially novices – and all philosophical approaches. The Newcastle Philosophy Society aims to release philosophical conversation back into the public arena – pubs, cafes, community halls and the like in Newcastle upon Tyne – to further free philosophy from the dusty academic closet. We are not affiliated with any academic institution, and most of our members do not have formal qualifications in philosophy.
The NPS is a registered charity (Registered Charity Number: 1106082) and is a branch of the Royal Institute of Philosophy. It follows a Constitution:

The NPS was established in 2003 and celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2013.
Our events are designed for engagement and interaction, sharing and dialogue, in a spirit of mature enquiry rather than debate. Events are usually free, though a small number may ask for a small fee to cover room hire costs (and information about such fees will be highlighted prior to the event). There is no need to be a member to attend – simply turn up at the time and place given on the calendar on the main page.
Membership of the Society is free, and is not necessary to attend events. Members receive a weekly email, as well as being granted voting rights at the Annual General Meeting. Those wishing to be a member should follow the instructions for joining the mailing list or speak to any group leader. If you would like to become a member without joining the mailing list, then please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org or speak to any group leader. The Society has several hundred members (as of 2016).
Running the Society is a board of trustees and appointed officers who meet on a monthly basis (everyone is welcome to attend these meetings). All trustees and officers are members who volunteer to perform the administrative tasks required to ensure the smooth running of the Society.
